Mission Statement and History
The Lipid Working Group of Turkish Society of Cardiology was established in 1994 with the major aim to promote the cooperation of its members interested in the study of lipid, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular epidemiology. An equally important mission was the dissemination of clinical expertise regarding the prevention of atherosclerosis. This includes outreach programmes to the community, postgraduate education of practititoners, and development of national guidelines. Prof. Altan Onat, the president of the Society at that time, was the founding president of the group.
The Lipid Working Group organizes many CME courses for cardiologists, specialists in internal medicine and general pratictioners in order to increase the awareness of the management and treatment of global cardiovascular risk and hyperlipidemia. While stand alone meetings are important for consolidating the aims and directions of the Society, we have also held combined meetings with other working groups of the society. The Lipid Working group participates in an Annual Scientific Meeting every year with two other working groups of the Society, Hypertension and Coronary Artery Working Groups. These meetings organized in different places of the country have attracted many clinicians. The Lipid Working Group participates in the annual scientific congress of the Turkish Society of Cardiology and organizes symposia, mini-courses and how-to sessions.
The Working Group publishes quarterly newsletters that feature information about lipid and atherosclerosis, recent important publications as well as dates for forthcoming meetings.
The members of the Lipid Working Group have participated in the preparation and leaded the publication of the National Guideline for the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
The Working Group has leaded, completed and published a multicenter national study regarding cardiovascular risk reduction by guideline implentation.
