Mission statement
The Hellenic Atherosclerosis Society (HAS) has been founded in 2002. The members of the Society are physicians of various specialties (cardiologists, internists, endocrinologists, diabetologists, general practitioners, etc.) and bio-scientists (dieticians, biochemists, epidemiologists etc.) interested in the study of atherosclerosis. The mission of the Society is to promote in Greece the advancement of science, research, and teaching related to the fields of atherosclerosis, and its risk factors (dyslipidemia, arterial hypertension, diabetes, smoking, pro-thrombotic states, etc.) as well as its manifestations (CHD, stroke, PAD, etc.). The Society shall endeavor to achieve these objectives by promoting the exchange of existing knowledge through organization of scientific sessions at its annual and several local meetings, and by sponsoring symposia, conferences and workshops or co-sponsoring these with other scientific societies; fostering the introduction of new methodology. Moreover, the society offers scholarships and travelling fellowships and finances research of young investigators.


Planned future activities
The Society is giving annually several Grants to young scientists in order to support their doctorate research or to fund their training abroad and offers Prizes to outstanding young researchers.
HAS has also planned and is carrying out epidemiological studies, like the ATTEMPT study (Assessing The Treatment Effect in Metabolic syndrome without Perceptible diabetes), the epidemiology of smoking among the Greek population and the perception of the population about the CVD risk factors.
